Hamilton's stated position is that the system needs a certain amount of stress for it to work correctly, and that it must be physical stress rather than taxes or traffic. Because that stress no longer arrives naturally, it has to be induced, which is why he uses heat, ice, breath work and weighted pool training at his Malibu house through XPT. The critical criterion is control of the exit: a giant wave can decide not to let you up, whereas in the pool you can always let go of your weights and swim to the surface, so you retain participation in the outcome. He notes the same logic already governs supplementation, where we take vitamin D because we no longer get enough sun. He also observes that the pool work neutralises status because it selects on mindset, not size, and that big strong athletes freak out while smaller people who are mental giants handle the ice and the deep end.

Origin

Developed out of Hamilton's big wave training and formalised into XPT, the pool, ice and breathwork system run at his Malibu house with visiting athletes and coaches.

Core principles

  • 01The system requires stress to function correctly.
  • 02Only physical stress counts; ambient anxiety does not.
  • 03You must control the exit from the stressor.
  • 04Induce what the environment no longer supplies.
  • 05The stressor selects on mindset, not on size.

How to run it

  1. 1

Audit what stress has been removed

Identify the physical inputs your environment no longer supplies. Hamilton's parallel case is sunlight, which we now replace with vitamin D supplementation because we no longer get enough of it naturally.

Pro tip Walking is his most-cited example; Europeans walk far more, and human metabolism functions better for it.

  2. 2

    Select stressors you can exit

Choose stressors where you keep participation in the outcome. The pool qualifies because you can always let go of your weights and swim to the surface; a giant wave does not, because it can decide not to let you up.

Watch out Uncontrollable stressors do not confer the benefit safely; the escape route is the criterion, not the intensity.

  3. 3

    Apply the modalities

Use the specific stressors Hamilton names: heat and ice, breath work, and weighted training at the bottom of the pool. These are the XPT modalities run at the Malibu house.

Pro tip Breath work is packaged separately in the XPT app at xptlife.com, alongside a two and a half day camp format.

  4. 4

    Reference your own barrier

Set the load against your own limit and try to lift it, rather than against whoever else is in the pool. Hamilton describes this as the approach: find your own barriers and lift those up.

Watch out Comparison in a breath-hold or ice environment drives people past a limit they have not actually raised.

  5. 5

Train it inside a community rhythm

Run the sessions on a repeating schedule with other people. At Hamilton's house lifting and dry land work runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with pool work Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Pro tip On the days you feel flat, the group carries you; Hamilton says somebody else being ready to go is what gets you going.

In the wild

The pool as a status neutraliser

Hamilton reports that the people who surprise him in the pool work are usually people nobody has heard of. A big, super strong athlete will freak out under the stress of the ice and being weighted in the deep end, while a physically frailer woman who is a mental giant handles it. He describes the environment as neutralising for exactly that reason.

The protocol reliably selects and develops stress tolerance rather than existing physical advantage, which is why NFL and NBA athletes are sent there by coaches and physios coming out of injury.

Common mistakes

Substituting ambient stress for physical stress

Hamilton is explicit that owing taxes or sitting in traffic is not the stress the system needs. Chronic psychological load does not deliver the adaptation and stacks on top of the deficit rather than resolving it.

Choosing a stressor you cannot exit

Without an escape route you lose participation in the outcome, which is what separates a controlled pool session from a giant wave that can decide not to let you up. This is a safety criterion, not a preference.

Trying to hack around the requirement

Hamilton's stated view is that you cannot hack your way around biology, and that hacking can support work but not replace it. Supplements and gadgets substituted for the stress input leave the deficit in place.

Is it for you?

Best for

People with soft, sedentary daily loads who need a controlled way to reintroduce the physical stress their biology expects.

Not ideal for

Anyone already under heavy uncontrolled physical or medical load, or without supervision for pool, ice and breath-hold work.
